Ingredients

Puff Pastry - Ready-rolled puff pastry is the hero of this recipe. Its flaky, buttery layers bake to perfection, creating a crisp base and edges for your Christmas tree pizza pastry. I love using ready-rolled pastry because it’s a huge time-saver during the busy holiday season.
Passata - Smooth and flavorful, passata is the ideal base sauce for this pizza pastry. Its light texture doesn’t weigh down the puff pastry while still delivering that signature tomato flavor. For an extra touch, you can add a pinch of sugar or garlic powder to elevate the taste even more.
Italian Seasoning - A sprinkle of Italian seasoning takes the flavor up a notch. The blend of oregano, basil, thyme, and rosemary adds warmth and depth, tying all the toppings together.
Pepperoni - Pepperoni slices add a festive pop of red to your Christmas tree pizza pastry, echoing the holiday theme while packing a punch of savory, slightly spicy flavor. Feel free to swap it out for vegetarian alternatives or other cured meats to suit your guests' preferences.
Mozzarella - Mozzarella is the perfect cheese for this recipe because it melts beautifully, creating that gooey, stretchy texture everyone loves on pizza. I like using pre-shredded mozzarella for convenience, but you can also tear fresh mozzarella for a creamier touch.
Fresh Basil - Adding fresh basil as a garnish not only gives your Christmas tree pizza pastry a vibrant finish but also balances the richness of the cheese and pepperoni with a fresh, aromatic note.

Instructions

- Step 1: Begin by preheating your oven to 200°C (400°F). Unroll the puff pastry on parchment paper or a baking tray. To achieve that classic Christmas tree shape, either freehand it with a sharp knife or use a template. For beginners, drawing a tree shape on an A4 piece of paper and cutting around it works wonders. Once the tree shape is cut out, cut out a star with a cutter or by hand on a piece of the cut out pastry. Lightly score the edges with a knife to create a crust and poke holes in the center with a fork to prevent puffing during baking.

- Step 2: Spread the passata evenly over the base of your Christmas tree pizza pastry, stopping just short of the edges to leave a clean crust, this helps keeps the edges crisp. Add a generous sprinkle of Italian seasoning over the passata along with the mozzarella.

- Step 3: Add pepperoni then carefully transfer your Christmas tree pizza pastry onto a baking sheet and bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.

- Step 4: Once out of the oven, let your pizza pastry cool for a few minutes before adding fresh basil leaves. The green garnish enhances the festive tree look and brings a fresh, herbal twist to the rich flavors. Slice into pieces and serve warm.
Hint: While pepperoni and mozzarella are classics, you can experiment with other toppings like diced bell peppers, olives, or even pineapple for a unique twist.
How I like to use leftovers
For leftovers of the excess pastry, I like to go in with cookie cutters and make little pizza snacks.

Substitutions
Puff pastry - Instead of puff pastry you can use gluten-free puff pastry for those avoiding gluten, ensuring everyone can enjoy the flaky texture. For a lighter alternative, try phyllo dough layered with melted butter, or go all out with homemade pastry if you have time to spare.
Passata - If you don't have tomato paste thinned with water makes a great substitute, offering a similar consistency and flavor. Alternatively, pizza sauce adds extra seasoning, while pesto (basil or sun-dried tomato) brings a unique twist to your Christmas tree pizza pastry base.
Italian seasoning - Add a sprinkle of Herb de Provence can give a similarly aromatic profile. If you don’t have a blend, you can mix individual dried herbs like oregano, thyme, and basil to achieve the same effect. For an even fresher taste, finely chopped fresh herbs such as basil or rosemary work wonderfully.
Pepperoni - Try vegetarian pepperoni for a plant-based alternative. Other cured meats like salami, chorizo, or prosciutto add variety, while roasted vegetables like bell peppers, zucchini, or mushrooms create a flavorful vegetarian option.
Mozzarella - If mozzarella isn’t available or preferred, cheddar cheese can add a sharp, melty touch. For a dairy-free option, go for vegan mozzarella-style cheese, or experiment with feta cheese to bring a tangy, creamy element to your Christmas tree pizza pastry.
Fresh basil - basil is perfect for a garnish, parsley provides a milder flavor with the same vibrant green look. You can also use baby spinach leaves for freshness, or in a pinch, a sprinkle of dried basil can still enhance the festive appeal.
Variations
Veggie Christmas Tree Pizza Pastry - Swap pepperoni for roasted vegetables like bell peppers, zucchini, and mushrooms. Add a sprinkle of feta for extra tang. This vegetarian Christmas tree pizza pastry keeps all the festive charm while offering a lighter, veggie-packed option perfect for plant-based guests.
Spicy Christmas Tree Pizza Pastry - Add chili flakes or sliced jalapeños over the passata before layering your toppings. Use spicy salami or nduja for an extra kick. This fiery Christmas tree pizza pastry will be the highlight for spice lovers at your holiday table.
Cheesy Christmas Tree Pizza Pastry - Turn up the indulgence by using a mix of cheeses like mozzarella, cheddar, and Parmesan. This gooey, golden Christmas tree pizza pastry will satisfy even the most ardent cheese lover and is sure to disappear quickly at any party.
Equipment
Storage
To store your Christmas tree pizza pastry, allow it to cool completely before transferring to an airtight container. If you plan to serve it within 2–3 days, keep it refrigerated. When ready to enjoy, reheat in an oven preheated to 180°C (350°F) for 5–7 minutes to restore its crispness.
If you want to make the Christmas tree pizza pastry ahead of time, assemble it up to the baking stage, cover it tightly with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. When ready, bake fresh for the best results.
For longer storage, freeze the baked Christmas tree pizza pastry. Once cooled, wrap it tightly in aluminum foil and store in a freezer-safe bag for up to a month. To reheat, bake from frozen at 180°C (350°F) for 15–20 minutes, ensuring the pastry remains flaky and golden.
Top Tip
For a holiday touch, arrange toppings to resemble ornaments and garlands. Bell pepper rings and sliced olives can transform your Christmas tree pizza pastry into a true centerpiece.
FAQ
A soggy pastry can happen if the base isn’t scored or if the toppings are too wet. Ensure you poke holes in the pastry and use drained or thicker sauces like pizza sauce instead of watery options to keep it crisp.
Traditional pizza isn’t a pastry—it’s bread-based. However, a Christmas tree pizza pastry uses puff pastry as its base, making it a unique hybrid of pastry and pizza, combining the flakiness of pastry with classic pizza toppings.
Pizza dough can stay in the fridge for up to 3–5 days if stored in an airtight container. Use it quickly for fresher results, or freeze it to extend its life.
