If you love crispy tacos, juicy seasoned chicken, melty cheese, and fresh Mediterranean flavours, these cheesy Greek smashed tacos need to be next on your list. These viral-style smashed tacos get a Greek-inspired twist with herby chicken, creamy tzatziki, fresh salad toppings, crispy fries, and gooey melted cheese.

These cheesy Greek smashed tacos were inspired by both the viral smashed taco trend and Skepasti, a popular Greek street food made with grilled meat, cheese, fries, salad, and sauce tucked inside toasted bread or pita. I loved the idea of taking those bold flavours and turning them into tacos. The result is cheesy Greek smashed tacos packed with juicy herby chicken, melted cheese, crispy fries, fresh salad, and creamy tzatziki in every bite.
This was inspired by my chicken gyros smashed tacos. These flavours are so tasty and if you like them you should try my halloumi gyros.

Chicken Mince - Chicken mince creates the base of these cheesy Greek smashed tacos. It cooks quickly and becomes beautifully juicy when smashed thinly onto the tortilla. I like using chicken mince because it stays light while still absorbing loads of flavour from the seasonings.
Oregano, dried basil, paprika, garlic salt - These spices gives these cheesy Greek smashed tacos that unmistakable Greek flavour.
Salt and Pepper - Simple but essential. Salt enhances every ingredient, while pepper adds a little background warmth.
Mini Tortillas - Mini tortillas are perfect for handheld cheesy Greek smashed tacos. They crisp up beautifully in the pan while holding the chicken securely.
Gouda Cheese - Gouda melts beautifully and gives these cheesy Greek smashed tacos that irresistible cheese pull. I like Gouda because it is creamy, buttery, and mild enough not to overpower the Greek flavours.
Cherry Vine Tomatoes - Tomatoes add freshness, sweetness, and juiciness. Their acidity also cuts through the richness of the cheese and chicken.
Cucumber - Cucumber brings crunch and cooling freshness. It works perfectly with the warm taco base and creamy tzatziki.
Red Onion - Red onion adds sharpness and a slight sweetness. Thin slices work best so they do not overpower the other toppings.
Fries - Fries might be the star ingredient in these cheesy Greek smashed tacos. Adding fries gives that authentic Greek street food feel, similar to a loaded gyros wrap. I love using crispy oven fries because they are convenient and stay crunchy.
Tzatziki - Tzatziki brings everything together. It adds creaminess, garlic, freshness, and that classic Greek yoghurt tang. No cheesy Greek smashed tacos are complete without it.

Instructions
Jump to Recipe for quantitiesStart by cooking your fries according to the packet instructions until crisp and golden. While the fries cook, chop the tomatoes and cucumber into small pieces and thinly slice the red onion. Set everything aside so assembly is easy later.

- Step 1: Add the chicken mince to a bowl along with oregano, dried basil, paprika, garlic salt, salt, and pepper. Mix until evenly combined. Take one portion of chicken and place it onto a mini tortilla. Use your hands or the back of a spoon to press the chicken into an even thin layer covering the tortilla right to the edges.

- Step 2: Heat a frying pan over medium-high heat and add a little oil.
Place 2 to 4 tortillas into the pan, chicken side down. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until the chicken is deeply golden and cooked through.

- Step 3: Flip each taco so the tortilla side is down. Top each taco with a slice of Gouda.
Add a small splash of water to the pan and immediately cover with a lid. Cook for around a minute until the cheese is fully melted and gooey.

- Step 4: Remove the tacos from the pan. Top each one with chopped cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, crispy fries, and a generous spoonful of tzatziki.
Hint: Adding a splash of water to the pan before covering with a lid creates steam, which melts the cheese much faster and more evenly. This gives you that perfect gooey cheese layer without overcooking the tortilla or drying out the chicken underneath.
Substitutions
Chicken Mince – Swap for lamb mince for a richer, more traditional Greek flavour, turkey mince for a leaner option, or plant-based mince for a vegetarian-friendly version with similar texture.
Cherry Tomatoes – Use roasted red peppers for a sweeter, smoky flavour or sun-dried tomatoes for an intense, concentrated burst of taste.
Cucumber – Replace with finely shredded lettuce for extra crunch or diced celery for a fresher, slightly peppery bite.
Red Onion – Use shallots for a milder onion flavour or pickled onions for extra tang and brightness.
Fries – Swap for roasted potato cubes for a chunkier texture or sweet potato fries for a sweeter, slightly caramelised flavour.
Mini Tortillas – Use Greek flatbreads for a more authentic skepasti-inspired feel or lettuce cups for a lighter, low-carb option.
Gouda Cheese – Replace with mozzarella for extra stretch, cheddar for a sharper flavour, or Greek kasseri for a more traditional melty cheese option.
Oregano – Use mixed Italian herbs for similar herby notes or fresh oregano for a more vibrant flavour.
Dried Basil – Swap with thyme for a slightly earthier flavour or parsley for a fresher herbal finish.
Paprika – Use smoked paprika for deeper smokiness or chilli powder for extra heat.
Garlic Salt – Replace with garlic powder plus salt to control seasoning separately, or onion salt for a slightly sweeter savoury flavour.
Salt and Pepper – Adjust to taste or use seasoned salt for extra savoury depth.
Tzatziki – Use garlic yoghurt sauce for a similar creamy tang, whipped feta dip for a saltier, richer topping, or hummus for a dairy-free creamy alternative.
Variations
Lamb Greek Smashed Tacos - Swap the chicken mince for lamb mince for a richer, more traditional gyros-inspired flavour. Lamb pairs beautifully with oregano, garlic, and tzatziki, creating extra savoury depth. I love adding crumbled feta on top too for added saltiness and a more authentic Greek-style finish.
Halloumi Greek Smashed Tacos - For a vegetarian version, use grated or finely chopped halloumi mixed with grated courgette and herbs. This creates a salty, savoury base that crisps beautifully in the pan. Add hot honey or chilli oil on top for a sweet-spicy contrast against the cool tzatziki.
Spicy Greek Smashed Tacos - Add chilli flakes, cayenne, or harissa paste to the chicken mixture for heat. You can also mix a little sriracha into the tzatziki for a spicy creamy sauce. Pickled red onions work especially well here, adding brightness that balances the spice and richness.
Equipment
Storage
These cheesy Greek smashed tacos are best enjoyed fresh straight from the pan, as this is when the tortillas are at their crispiest and the cheese is perfectly melted. However, leftovers can still be stored successfully with a few adjustments.
If possible, store the cooked taco bases separately from the fresh toppings. Place the cooked chicken-and-cheese tortillas in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Keep the chopped cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, fries, and tzatziki in separate containers to prevent everything becoming soggy.
To reheat, warm the taco bases in a dry frying pan over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes or in an air fryer for a few minutes until crisp again. Avoid microwaving if possible, as this softens the tortillas.
Once reheated, add fresh toppings and serve immediately. I do not recommend freezing fully assembled tacos because the fresh toppings and sauce will lose texture after thawing.
Top Tip
Make sure the chicken is spread into a very thin, even layer across the tortilla. Thick patches can take longer to cook and may stay soft rather than caramelising. A thinner layer helps create better contact with the pan, giving you maximum browning and flavour.
FAQ
Skepasti is a popular Greek street food made with grilled meat such as chicken or pork, fries, salad, cheese, and sauce, all sandwiched between two toasted pita breads or flatbreads. The name means “covered,” referring to the filling being enclosed inside the bread. them here
Your smashed tacos are cooked when the chicken is golden brown with caramelised edges and no pink remains in the centre. Because the meat is smashed thinly, it cooks quickly. If unsure, cut into the thickest part to check it is fully opaque throughout.
